Vegan Foods: UK demand for new vegan food products soars in lockdown

The demand for new #vegan #food products has increased hugely in the UK. Trademarks registration for new vegan food and drink products in the UK has doubled.

In 2018, we had 47 products (ice cream and meat-free products) registered and in 2019 we had 107 products registered. That is a 128% increase than last year.  

Customers are paying more attention to their diet, increasingly adopting “flexitarian” diets and demanding more plant-based food since #coronavirus and supermarkets have reported strong sales of plant-based ranges since the coronavirus outbreak began. Supermarkets and large multinational companies are investing more on #vegan #food

Following companies have registered the following trademarks:

Unilever: vegan ice cream for its Magnum and Ben and Jerrys brands.

Beyond Meat –trademarked “Beyond Butter”, “Beyond Cheese” and “Beyond Mince”.

Lidl: trademarked a range of vegan products including pastries and baguettes,

Ikea: will sell “plant balls” same as meatballs.

Sainsbury’s: trademarked mushroom-based “shroomdog”

Tesco: Trademarked 30 new plant-based products across its Wicked Kitchen and Plant Chef ranges in June,

Honest Burger and Leon also entered the fray for meat substitutes and plant-based condiments.

Upfield: The owner of Flora, bought the vegan cheese producer Violife.

Daisy Divoka, an associate at EMW, said: “There are now more vegan products on supermarket shelves than ever before. Multinational corporations have identified this as a fast-growing sector and are competing to register their trademarks to capture and defend a share of the market.”

Drinks, household and toiletry products are our next biggest growth in plant-based categories.
