Eat Out to Help Out

As the county is coming out of the effects caused by Covid-19 effects, the government has offered a scheme to encourage people to eat out again with a 50% discount on food and non-alcoholic drinks up to £10 per person including children.

You need to know the following information:

'Eat Out to Help Out' scheme:

This is a UK-wide scheme to support 100K businesses in the UK, to protect 1.80m jobs. More than 32K organizations have joined in the scheme so far. This will help the businesses, the diners, the tourists, etc.

Duration of the scheme:

The scheme runs from 3^rd to 31^st August 2020, only on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays every week.

Discounts:

Discounts apply only on eating to eating in customers up to £10 per customer including children.

On food: 50%

Non-alcoholic drinks: 50%

No discount on alcoholic drinks

The scheme can be used as many times as one likes.

Discount Voucher:

You do not need a voucher for this discount.

Which organization can join in the scheme:

•Restaurants

•Cafes

•Pubs that serve food

•Hotel restaurants

•Restaurants with cafes within the tourist attractions, holiday sites, and leisure facilities

•Dining rooms within members' clubs

•Workplace and school canteens

Who can’t join:

•Establishments that only offer takeaway food and/or drink

•Catering services for private functions

•Hotels that provide 'room service' only

•Dining services (such as packaged dinners on cruises)

•Mobile food vans/trailers

Vegan Foods: UK demand for new vegan food products soars in lockdown

The demand for new #vegan #food products has increased hugely in the UK. Trademarks registration for new vegan food and drink products in the UK has doubled.

In 2018, we had 47 products (ice cream and meat-free products) registered and in 2019 we had 107 products registered. That is a 128% increase than last year.  

Customers are paying more attention to their diet, increasingly adopting “flexitarian” diets and demanding more plant-based food since #coronavirus and supermarkets have reported strong sales of plant-based ranges since the coronavirus outbreak began. Supermarkets and large multinational companies are investing more on #vegan #food

Following companies have registered the following trademarks:

Unilever: vegan ice cream for its Magnum and Ben and Jerrys brands.

Beyond Meat –trademarked “Beyond Butter”, “Beyond Cheese” and “Beyond Mince”.

Lidl: trademarked a range of vegan products including pastries and baguettes,

Ikea: will sell “plant balls” same as meatballs.

Sainsbury’s: trademarked mushroom-based “shroomdog”

Tesco: Trademarked 30 new plant-based products across its Wicked Kitchen and Plant Chef ranges in June,

Honest Burger and Leon also entered the fray for meat substitutes and plant-based condiments.

Upfield: The owner of Flora, bought the vegan cheese producer Violife.

Daisy Divoka, an associate at EMW, said: “There are now more vegan products on supermarket shelves than ever before. Multinational corporations have identified this as a fast-growing sector and are competing to register their trademarks to capture and defend a share of the market.”

Drinks, household and toiletry products are our next biggest growth in plant-based categories.

McDonald's to reopen 700 restaurants for dine-in tomorrow with changing rules for who can eat in their restaurants. Offers 50% off deal next month up to £10 per head

Openings:

After #Coronavirus (#Covid-19) lockdown in March-20, the fast-food #restaurant chain McDonald’s is reopening around 700 restaurants for dining-in with restricted capacity across the UK from Wednesday the 22^nd July 2020. The #gourmet group has opened almost all of their branches and successfully traded since 4^th July 2020 for takeaways and drive-thru. The chain will not be reopening dine-in restaurants in Wales.

Changing rules:

Reducing capacity by up to 70% in some restaurants;

Customer can order using the app, at the till or kiosk;

Diners will have to leave their contact details;

Food will be served on the table only;

Restaurants floor will be marked and signposted to keep a safe distance;

Touchpoints, self-order screens, card readers and doors will be sanitized at least every 30 minutes;

Perspex screens have been installed in the kitchens, service areas and drive-thru windows;

Additional protective equipment has been provided such as disposable gloves, face coverings, etc.

McDonald's Offers:

The restaurant group is taking part in “Eat Out to Help Out” which will help families eating out. It will offer 50% off dine-in bills up to a maximum of £10 per head on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays in August. It will also reduce the price from 15 July until 12 January 2021 where VAT was applied 20% (Now they will charge 5%). They will reduce the price of Happy Meals by 30p and breakfast meals by 50p, with price cuts, also recommended for Big Macs, Quarter Pounders and McNuggets.

Hidden lockdown costs 'crippling' restaurant owners

The #restaurant, #Take ways, #Pubs and #hospitality sectors have suffered the most during the #coronavirus lockdown. Although restaurants and pubs have opened their door on the 4th of July 2020, not many people are yet comfortable to dine out. Still, social distancing rules are in place in the hospitality sectors. The following hidden costs have crippled the restaurants and pubs even more.

1. Credit card charges: The government is encouraging and most people are paying by card instead of cash. Card payment is more #Covid-19 secure than hard cash payment. Unfortunately, the card company charges a commission to the restaurants for taking card payments. That erodes the profit of the company.  Stefano Rossi, the owner of Stefano's Fish and Chips in Edinburgh's Morningside, said his earnings were being "whittled away to nothing". He added: "Before the lockdown, I used to pay about £40 a month on card machine charges but now I've been paying £400 a month. I need customers to return to paying with money now as all the charges are crippling my business". 

2. Delivery charges: Most customers order online using Just Eat, UberEATS, or Deliveroo app. Stefano Rossi said that he was paying £550 a month extra on Just Eat charges since the lockdown began. He added "People just don't realize that when they pay £10 for a takeaway order, we only receive £8.10 and that is if we use our driver," he said. "Just Eat charges 14% on every order plus a 50p service charge and it's 35% if you use their driver. The delivery order costs are just too much now and I would urge customers to please start coming back to the shop and to use money."

Nadeem Amgid, owner of Yayas Grillhouse in Edinburgh's Colinton Mains, said "I've seen a huge difference in my card charge bill since the lockdown and am now paying £500 more on charges a month. Then there are the third-party delivery charges which you were almost forced to join when the lockdown started as that was the way people were ordering food. "Before the lockdown, I was spending about £600 a month on Just Eat and Uber Eat charges. But since the lockdown, I'm spending £3,480 a month."

3. No Show Costs: Most restaurants take bookings but do not take any payment in advance for the bookings. On average, 20% of diners fail to turn up for their reservations in big cities, according to an in-depth study on restaurant no-shows. A 2015 survey by a restaurant booking system put at £16bn the amount British restaurants are losing out annually due to no-shows. Some restaurants take extra bookings than their capacity to adjust the NO-SHOWS. 

Some restaurants are taking advance payment for bookings up to 5% of estimated bills. Now they are thinking of increasing the amount to 15%. Some restaurants sell their booking like a theatre ticket that you pay in advance for the booking. If you do not show up, you lose your money. The National Restaurant Association advises to avoid now shows:

Put the booking confirmation in writing;

Make a phone call to the customer reminding their booking;

Make it easy for customers to cancel

Take the credit card number and advise them there could be a change in case they don't turn up; Offer customers something free who booked and turned up.

Hardest hit regions of the UK by Coronavirus

The UK employee numbers fell by 649,000 as people losing jobs during the #Covid-19 crisis. ONS says as #Coronavirus started; universal credit claimants went up. 333,000 people have lost jobs between April to June 2020.

Coronavirus has hit the different regions of the country differently. As per ONS, the Worst hit regions are:

2. Scotland - 62% of businesses reporting a fall in revenue

3. South West - 61.9% of businesses reporting a fall in revenue

4. Yorkshire & the Humber - 61.2% of businesses reporting a fall in revenue

5. West Midlands - 60.9% of businesses reporting a fall in revenue

6. North West - 60.1% of businesses reporting a fall in revenue

7. East Midlands - 59.3% of businesses reporting a fall in revenue

8. South East - 59.2% of businesses reporting a fall in revenue

9. London - 58.9% of businesses reporting a fall in revenue

10. East of England - 58.7% of businesses reporting a fall in revenue

11. Wales - 57.5% of businesses reporting a fall in revenue

12. Northern Ireland - 48.9% of businesses reporting a fall in revenue

#Restaurant and #hospitality sectors have been hit hard. Ask Italian and Zizzi are planning to close up to 25 more branches with hundreds of jobs at risk. The threat emerged as Pizza Express prepares to close a possible 75 restaurants, putting more than 1,000 jobs at risk. Azzurri is in trouble and is in talks with their partners and creditors. They operate 311 restaurants and shops in the UK, three in the Republic of Ireland, and one in Shanghai. It employs over 6,000 staff and serves over 20 million meals a year. The firm saw restaurant sales rise 7% to £299m last year but made a loss of £16.3m. Chinatown at Soho, London is highly worried about the future of the restaurants in that area. Restaurants and pubs have opened on 4th July 2020. From August 1 we will reopen most remaining leisure settings, namely bowling, ice-skating rinks, casinos and we will enable close contact services at beauticians to resume. Sadly, customers are still not confident enough to dine in.
