BioNTech and Pfizer raise hopes with breakthrough Covid-19 vaccine. The early data shows that their Coronavirus vaccine strongly effective. Nils Pratley says it is ‘A great day for humanity’.
The vaccine is the first to be tested in the United States to generate late-stage
data. The companies said an early analysis of the results showed that
individuals who received two injections of the vaccine three weeks apart
experienced more than 90% fewer cases of symptomatic Covid-19 than those who
received a placebo. For months, researchers have cautioned that a vaccine that
might only be 60% or 70% effective.
The
inoculation, based on mRNA technology found to be 90 per cent effective in
phase 3 trials involving more than 43,000 participants, far exceeding the threshold required by regulators.
Question
still, remains who will have the Pfizer vaccine first and when can I get it? It
depends how old you are, as age is the biggest risk factor for severe Covid-19.
In the UK, older care home residents and care home staff are top of the
preliminary priority list. They are followed by health workers such as hospital
staff. People are then ranked by age, with people under 50 at the bottom of the
list.
